Essentials for Spanish Cooking

I’m Guyanese and Hindu, but I have always been heavily influenced by Spanish culture since I can remember. I enjoyed going to my friends’ house to eat their home cooked food because the flavors are bold, intense, and deliciously similar to Southeast Asian cuisine.

I picked up many recipes, tips, and tricks along the way from abuelas, tios, and tias, and madres! And enjoy perfecting my own Spanish dishes at home. You only need a handful of spices, herbs, and mixes to keep the flavors authentic and scrumptious.

After years and years of cooking I got my Spanish cooking down pact! Of course, there is always room for improvement in fact, I plan on learning to make some of my mother-in-laws wonderful dishes this summer because she has her own twist on classic Puerto-Rican dishes.

Here is a list of essentials you need in your kitchen to cook authentic Spanish cuisine! You will find herbs, spices, and even cooking utensils!

  1. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  2. Green bell pepper
  3. Annatto
  4. Goya Adobo
  5. Goya Sazon
  6. Goya Chicken Bouillon
  7. Sofrito (Homemade is Best!)

Now that you know the basic spices, herbs, condiments, and other essentials for Spanish cooking, we can’t forget your most important component, your Caldero!

What is a Caldero? It’s an aluminum pot known for its ability to withstand years and year of cooking, it’s also famous in Guyanese households as well! It’s the perfect pot for sautéing, braised meat, simmer stews, and soups, and making the most delicious Spanish white rice with pegao (the crunchy rice left over at the bottom of the pot and my favorite part!).

You can purchase this set on Amazon! I promise, you will use all of these pots on a weekly if not daily basis. It’s also a great gift for someone you know who loves to cook!
